Tentative Title: The Value of Naturalism
My project is an historical-systematic analysis of philosophical naturalism in Nietzsche with an aim at correcting and further develop interpretative attempts at making Nietzsche more relevant in contemporary discussions in the philosophy of science. An increasing interest in Nietzsche’s philosophy within analytic philosophy has brought with it attempts at integrating and partly accommodating Nietzsche’s ideas with modern analytic philosophy. The hope is that more attention to Nietzsche’s philosophy can shed new light on issues in modern philosophy. The attempts, however, have been criticized for falsely appropriating and misrepresenting his ideas. Many aspects of Nietzsche’s thinking are also neglected or underdeveloped. It is therefore both relevant and desirable to correct these attempts, address gaps in the research and further develop the exchange between analytic philosophy and Nietzsche’s innovative and critical ideas.
Simon Nordberg began his higher education in Philosophy at the University of Kristiansand, he finished his bachelor’s degree at the University of Bergen, and then took his master’s degree at the University of Oslo. The MA dissertation was also concentrated on Nietzsche’s naturalism, with special emphasis on three prominent naturalistic readings of Nietzsche’s naturalism and an assessment of these in addition to a complementary reading which tried to integrate Nietzsche’s critique of science.
Systematic: The philosophy of science, metaethics, philosophical naturalism, value theory, normative theory, ancient philosophy.
Historical: Nietzsche, Hume, Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Peter Wessel Zapffe.
